From Systemic Failure to Hope: How Wings to Freedom Stood with Tasha Patterson and Helped Inspire Legislative Change

At Wings to Freedom Foundation, we believe that when systems fail, communities must rise. Our mission is to support survivors of injustice—whether personal or systemic—and to turn their stories into a force for change.

Tasha Patterson is one of those stories. She wasn’t the victim of abuse, but of a devastating systemic failure. When Florida’s child protection system overlooked clear warning signs, her voice—full of truth and resilience—was nearly lost in the cracks of bureaucracy. But Tasha didn’t stay silent. And neither did we.

When she needed support, Wings to Freedom provided a $3,500 grant to help her with urgent personal needs. Because being failed by a system should never mean being left without support.

We didn’t stop there. Partnering with Senator Barbara Sheriff, we helped push forward what is now known as Patterson’s Law—a proposed legislative reform that would improve how child abuse investigations are handled across the state. It’s a step toward accountability, transparency, and protection for those most vulnerable.

Tasha’s courage, and our shared commitment to justice, is what drives our work every day.
